Do I Need a Panel Upgrade Before Installing an EV Charger in North Scottsdale?
Electric vehicles are everywhere in North Scottsdale. Drive through DC Ranch, Troon North, or Silverleaf on any given evening and you’ll spot Teslas, Rivians, and Lucid Airs in nearly every driveway. And with good reason — these are some of the most capable vehicles on the road today. But when it comes time to install a Level 2 home charger, one question comes up on almost every job we run in 85255: do I need a panel upgrade first?
The short answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no. The longer answer depends on your home’s current electrical setup — and getting it wrong can mean a tripping breaker, a fire hazard, or a charger that simply won’t work at full capacity. Here’s what every North Scottsdale homeowner needs to know before calling an electrician.
What a Level 2 EV Charger Actually Requires
A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts and typically draws between 32 and 50 amps continuously. The most popular home charger — the Tesla Wall Connector — is designed to run on a dedicated 60-amp circuit, which means your panel needs to have a 60-amp breaker slot available with capacity to support it safely.
For most homes built after 2005, this isn’t a problem. Newer construction in DC Ranch, Windgate Ranch, and Grayhawk typically came with 200-amp panels that have room to spare. But for homes built in the 1990s or early 2000s — which makes up a large portion of Troon North and parts of Fountain Hills — the story is often different.
Signs Your Panel May Not Be Ready
You may need a panel upgrade before your EV charger install if:
- Your home has a 100-amp service panel (common in older Scottsdale homes) • Your existing 200-amp panel has no open breaker slots • You’re already running high-load appliances — electric HVAC, pool heater, heated floors, whole-home generator • Your panel is more than 25 years old and showing signs of wear • You have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel (these have known safety issues and should be replaced regardless)
On a typical EV charger installation in North Scottsdale, we check all of these before we quote the job. There’s no point in running a $1,200 charger circuit into a panel that can’t safely support it.
When You Don’t Need an Upgrade
If your home has a modern 200-amp panel with available capacity, you likely won’t need a full upgrade. In that case, we run a dedicated 60-amp circuit from your panel to your garage, install the charger, pull the permit, and you’re charging the same day.
We’ve done dozens of these installs in DC Ranch, Troon, and Fountain Hills where no panel work was needed at all — the job took half a day and the customer was charging their Tesla that evening.
Bundling Both in One Visit
If you do need a panel upgrade, the good news is we can handle both in a single visit. We upgrade your panel to 200 amps (or 400 amps for larger estates with high electrical loads), then run the EV charger circuit the same day. Bundling saves you time, reduces the number of permit applications, and gets everything done with one inspection.
For larger homes in Silverleaf or Desert Mountain with multiple EVs, whole-home generators, and heavy HVAC loads, a 400-amp service upgrade may make more sense long-term.
